  1. I need a decoding ring!

    Sunday, March 14, 2010

Emerson, the author of Love & Respect, challenged us today to work to "decode" our spouse's message. This way we can receive the message rather than being misunderstood. If the conversation is not going like you expected, he suggested taking responsibility for yourself to see if you came across as unloving or disrespectful. You could re-enact the conversation in the bathroom mirror to see if your verbal or non-verbal communication was damaging. You might also try asking your spouse:
Wives: "Your response felt unloving. Did I come across as disrespectful?"
Husbands: "That felt disrespectful. Did I come across as unloving?"

Does anyone think that decoding was a little more fun when you found the decoding ring in your cereal box for breakfast before you went to school?
Sometimes I think having a magic ring for marriage communication might come in handy!
